The U.S. intended to help the Filipino's revolt against the Spanish so that they would be their own country. After the war was over, the U.S. wanted to keep their presence in the Filipines until the filipino's had a steady form of government going. The whole time the U.S. was in the Philipines they thought that they were helping the Filipino's when the U.S. was just doing the same thing Spain did to the philipines.

T.R vs B.O
egalitarianism.
"Even as the world now is, it is not only feasible but advisable to make women equal to men before the law. . . A cripple or a consumptive in the eye of the law is equal to the strongest athlete or the deepest thinker; and the same justice should be shown to a woman whether she is, or is not, the equal of man. A son should have no more right to any inheritance than a daughter should have. Property is but little more likely to be mismanaged in the hands of a woman than in those of a man."
-Theodore Roosevelt
Roosevelt said that everybody had the right to vote and that everybody was equal. Even if he did not completely agree with all of his statements personally, he still knew that if the U.S.A. was to progress then it would have to get the help from everybody.
Obama wants everybody to be equal, he wants to get the justice system to get into better shape, he wants to completely get rid of racial profiling and hate crimes and is all for gay marriage. He thinks that is is important to be equal at this time because of the state our economy.
